Information Systems
There’s been a recent boom in both the private and public sectors which has once again fuelled the demand for information systems professionals. Sprott’s Bachelor of Commerce with a concentration in Information Systems will give you the necessary skills to link your Information and Communications Technology (ICT) knowledge with critical, value-adding business processes, a skill which will only become more valuable as new technologies are developed and the marketplace grows.
Information systems professionals have the ability to understand the technology and business processes and best leverage them for achieving the business goals. In the information systems concentration, you’ll have the best of both worlds: a thorough understanding of business and the technological savvy to translate business needs into concrete systems requirements for IT.
Course Highlights
BUSI2402 Business Application Development
Students are amazed by the number of Apps that have emerged in today’s world of ICTs, it seems that there is always “an app for that.” The basic skills to develop these never-ending applications are gained in this course by having an in-depth understanding of the logic that makes an application run. The course connects the dots between a business need and a computer application.
BUSI3402 Information Systems Analysis and Design
Business students, with or without a concentration in information systems, will benefit from this course through increased ability to understand business problems and how to make better business decisions to tackle those problems. In today’s business environment, managers must consider the technical systems that support business operations and a big part of systems is computing technology. The course covers “the processes, methods, techniques and tools that organizations use to determine how they should conduct their business, with a particular focus on how computer-based technologies can most effectively contribute to the way business is organized.” (ACM/AIS 2009 Curriculum Guidelines) Not unique to the IS concentration, the course provides students with the opportunity to develop the aptitude in business analysis, to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to think clearly, critically and systematically of the consequences of ICT application in business by focusing on the details of business requirements and technology capabilities and by “seeing a big picture” from a system’s perspective.
BUSI4402 –Information Systems Practicum
Few students realize that this course has the same benefits that an internship would offer. Working collaboratively in groups, students are faced with a real business need and they analyze their options, propose a solution and (in most cases) implement the solution. Some students continue working with those companies since they are (at the end) very knowledgeable of the way the system is integrated with the company’s goals.
BUSI4406 Decision Making and Support Systems
This course offers a deep understanding of how ICTs can support the primary role of managers: making decisions. Through a series of modules, the process of extracting knowledge out of information generated by using the data available in businesses, students develop skills to support the decision-making process of individuals and groups. Guest speakers working in the field bring to class relevant daily applications that are helping Canadian businesses succeed in this new globalized economy.
