Glossary

Blocks: each Module (a learning unit such as Communications ) is broken down into several units called blocks for presentation at different times over the 10 month term. Each block represents 3 1/4 hours of classroom time.

Group Norms: a set of norms or values that address participant and instructor expectations for the program and their respective roles within it. These are established by the participants and the instructor at the first session of the program.

Module: one complete unit of learning such as Communications or Marketing. In all, the curriculum consists of 10 modules relevant to building a sound base of management knowledge.

Participant: a woman currently in the workforce and already either in management or aspiring to a position in management and who is enrolled in the Management Development Program for Women.

Residential Component: for the first session of the program participants are housed at a resort outside Ottawa. As well as an intensive instructional session, the residential component provides participants with the opportunity to share their experiences and forge working relationships with other program participants.

Session: each of the ten monthly three-day meetings that make up the program.

Sponsor: the employer or supervisor enabling the applicant to participate in the program. The sponsor provides an appropriate work environment and the necessary support for the participant to carry out assignments and other responsibilities which are required in the program. Sponsors normally provide financial support for their candidates.

Workplace-based Assignments: these are major assignments which participants must complete for each module using data, experience or circumstances drawn from their own workplace as a basis for completing the assignments. The purpose is to ensure the relevance of the course content to the participants’ needs and the needs of the sponsor, and to demonstrate that classroom learning can be applied in a practical work setting.
