Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work

The Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work (CREWW), an organized research unit of the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University was established in 1992. The Centre’s mission is “to facilitate and disseminate research on women and work to both academics and the broader community.”

CREWW received generous funding from the Royal Bank and Ontario Hydro to establish the Royal Bank Visiting Chair on Women and Work. In addition KPMG provided funding in support of the Management Development Program for Women (MDPW), the educational component of the Centre.

Research

In 1996, the Royal Bank Visiting Chair on Women and Work was established to support research on women and work.

The first holder of the Chair was Elisabetta Bigsby, then Vice President, Residential Mortgages, Royal Bank of Canada. Under Ms. Bigsby’s leadership a study on “Men and Women Working as Partners: A Reality Check of Canadian Organizations” was published. Copies are available from the Centre.

The second Chairholder was V. Peter Harder, then Secretary of Treasury Board of Canada. Under Mr. Harder’s leadership, members of the Centre researched and published “Career Development in the Federal Public Service: Building a World Class Workforce.” The content of the complete study and the executive summary are available here.

The third Chairholder was Carol Stephenson, then President and CEO, Lucent Technologies. Under Ms. Stephenson’s leadership, faculty associated with the Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work conducted research on the project “Work Values and Retention Over the Life Cycle,” which was completed in 2003.

In addition to the Visiting Chair projects, many other research projects on women and work have been undertaken by the faculty of CREWW.
