SUMMER 2013
Summer registration advising (beginning March 27th)
For the first few weeks of summer registration, advisor’s will give priority to registration issues therefore assistance with course planning/scheduling/choosing concentrations etc will be very limited. You are welcome to drop by our main office, 710DT for registration assistance during our regular business hours.
Please refer to the Registrar’s Office summer supplement for information on summer registration.
Information for:
Registration for “Special Students” into Undergraduate Business courses:
Please follow the instructions on how to gain access to Business courses as a “Special Student”.
• A student from outside of Carleton must first approach the Universities Registrar’s office for assistance with registering as a Special student.
Information on how to gain access as a Special student can be found on the Registrar’s office’s website: http://www1.carleton.ca/registrar/special-students/
• Once approval is given and Special student status is reflected, students are directed to activate their Carleton Cmail account (student email account), as all correspondence with the University is done through this email.
Assistance on activating this email can be found through CCS’s (Computing and Communication Services) website: http://www6.carleton.ca/ccs/students/
Special students are the directed back to the Sprott Registration page, and must download the “Request for Waiver form” (See link provided above under information for “Special Students”). The Sprott School of Business enforces all prerequisites. If prerequisite courses were not competed at Carleton University, you are required to complete the Request for Waiver of Prerequisite form and submit it to staff in Room 710 Dunton Tower for approval.
To ensure approval is given the form must be completed in full and all required documentation must be submitted. A delay in approval will be possible in the event the form is not completed in full and/or not all documentation has been provided.
As well students are expected to submit a Registration Override through Carleton Central for the course(s) that they are requesting access for.
• The form is then reviewed by the Associate Dean, upon review students will then be notified via email the decision of the department.
• Approval does not guarantee access to the course as only requests for OPEN business courses will be considered.
For Winter term courses, Special students will not be given access to Winter term course(s) until Monday, January 7th 2013.
This is due to the high demand we have for our courses and the complexity of the program. Degree students are prioritized over special students; many will require adjustment to their Winter registration depending on the grades that they receive in their fall term courses.
• On January 7th the approvals are manually done, so approvals will be completed throughout the day. Notification will be sent to the student email account, which will then direct the student onto registering into their requested course through Carleton Central. If the requested course is full, students are directed to “Waitlist” in order to gain access.
Information pertaining to wait listing can be found below.
New! Timetable Builder
Effective June 1, the timetable builder will allow students to search the class schedule and build a conflict free hypothetical timetable. Using this tool, students will be able to see what their timetable will look like if they are successful in adding their selected courses.

Time Tickets & Year Standings
For Fall and Winter registration sessions all students are assigned ‘time-tickets’ according to their year standing and the last two digits of their student number. Once a time-ticket has activated for registration it will remain active until the last day to register in January. If you are not able to register when your time-ticket activates consider providing your registration information (chosen courses plus alternates, along with your Carleton Central password) to a family member or a trusted friend so that they can register for you.
Please note that the Sprott School of Business is not able to adjust year standings. If you have a concern regarding your year standing please contact the University Registrar’s Office for their direction.
For students registered in Summer Session 2012 courses please contact the Registrar’s Office for information on your year standing and how it affects your fall/winter registration time-ticket.
Your registration into a Business course will depend on the following factors:
- Your time-ticket has opened according to the University schedule.
- You have the necessary year standing for the course you are attempting to register into.
- You have completed any necessary course prerequisites – indicated in the course descriptions found in the Undergraduate Calendar. Course descriptions will also appear as you submit your registration on Carleton Central.
- There is space available in the course you are attempting to register into.
Wait Listing
The wait listing feature is available on Carleton Central for most Business courses and will only activate when a course reaches capacity. Students will have access to the wait listing feature depending on completion of the necessary course prerequisites and restrictions (as indicated in the course descriptions in the Undergraduate Calendar) and the year standing for the course. Once you have joined a wait list, you will receive an auto confirmation via Carleton email. If you receive notification that space has become available you will have 24 hours to register in the course or the next student on the list will be notified. Please do not contact the Department Office for information on wait listing.

For courses that do not have the wait listing feature enabled, please monitor Carleton Central for space to appear if someone should drop out.
Registration Override Requests
Students seeking permission to register in a closed section of a course or a course for which they lack the prerequisites may submit a request on-line via the “Registration Override Request” feature on the “Add or Drop Classes” page on Carleton Central. Please note that submitting a request does not guarantee space in courses. You may only submit one request per course. If you have non-Carleton equivalents for prerequisite courses you will be required to provide supporting documentation (i.e., transcripts and/or course descriptions for evaluation purposes).
Requests to be assigned to specific course sections and/or discussion groups will be granted if at all possible. Requests may be denied due to capacity limitations. If your request for a specific discussion group cannot be granted you may be assigned to a different discussion group.
Please do not contact the departmental office or the instructor of the course for updates on the status of your request. You will receive an automatic email reply via Carleton Connect account on the status of your request. Our response time to requests will be 3-5 business days.
Prerequisites for 3000- and 4000-level courses
The requirement for registration into 3000- and 4000-level Business courses will be provided as follows:
- 3000-level courses: third year standing and completed prerequisite courses as stated in the course description
- 4000-level courses: fourth year standing and completed prerequisite courses as stated in the course description
Students with completed prerequisites will have priority consideration over students lacking prerequisites.
Students who have completed course prerequisites and need a specific course to complete a degree requirement and graduating students will be given priority consideration over students wanting a course as an Elective. Requests will be denied due to capacity limitations.
